Qatar is one of Earth’s warmest places—and because of global warming, it’s only getting hotter. Temperatures there can now surpass 120 degrees Fahrenheit during the day. To help residents survive the potentially deadly heat, the Middle Eastern nation has started air-conditioning outside spaces, including markets and sidewalks. But the cold air comes at a high cost: Air-conditioning creates carbon emissions—which cause temperatures to rise even faster.
