This article, “Rethinking America’s Police,” explores the issue of police reform and calls to eliminate racial bias in law enforcement, sparked by the recent high-profile killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and other Black Americans.

I want to assure you that addressing the subject of police reform in no way suggests a lack of respect or appreciation for the 800,000 men and women serving in our communities as police officers and the sacrifices they make every day. As with all of our articles, our goal is to present facts and context so students can think critically about an important topic shaping their world.

Since this issue went to press, I have heard from many teachers about the unique challenges of teaching during this historic period of uncertainty and division in America. With that in mind, and because of the sensitive nature of this article, I want to make sure you have a chance to preview it first so you can decide if it is appropriate for your students. Therefore, we have not included this article in this issue’s student view on our website.

If you wish to use the article with your class, simply click on the button below, then share the story with your students. We’ve also created special resources to help you lead respectful and productive discussions.

Being a teacher has never been a more demanding task than it is right now. I want you to know that Scholastic is here for you. Please let us know if there are any other ways Junior Scholastic can support you and your students this year.

Warmly,
