In our Can You Find Mapman®? contest (see JS, January 29, 2018), we challenged you to figure out Mapman’s mystery destination, then create a map of the state where it’s located: Denali National Park and Preserve in Alaska.

This year’s winner is Alexis Hartog, 14, of Archimedean Middle Conservatory in Miami, Florida. Congratulations to Alexis and her teacher, Anais Rosales.

This year’s contest drew more than 4,500 entries from 45 states. Alexis’s map won for its extensive detail and clever design.

“The contest made me learn more about the world and tested the limits of my artistic abilities,” says Alexis, whose entry was created with colored pencils.

Her map features plants and animals native to Alaska, a Tlingit totem pole (the Tlingit people live on the southeast Alaskan coast), and the aurora borealis—bands of shimmering colored lights that sometimes appear in the Arctic’s night sky.

For her great work, Alexis will receive $500. The 25 runners-up will each get a Mapman T-shirt.

While you’re on vacation this summer, Mapman will be heading off to a new mystery location. Look for our contest in JS next year!
